Fennec Foxes can tolerate long durations without water.
Out of the fourteen carnivorous species of animals living in the Sahara, this species is the only one that can live away from water. For the most part, the little Fennec relies on berries and grass for its water intake.
Physiologically, their kidneys are also adapted to restrict water loss. Being nocturnal and living deep underground helps prevent water loss as well. Burrowing may also cause the formation of dew, which may be consumed by the little Fox.
However, it does not mean that it will refuse water if it sees any. The Fox will still consume water, if it is available.
Desert plants are also a good source of water for the Fennec, just as it may be water source for many other desert animals too. These Foxes can live for years without drinking water by relying heavily on the desert plants alone.
What about the babies? The baby Fennec drinks its mother’s milk for only about a month before moving on to solid foods, very much unlike most other mammals. This directly correlates to its gestational period of only 52 days.
The super large ears of this Fox also helps dissipate heat to keep it cool during the day. That way, the little fox need not worry about needing too much water to stay cool. Its coat also helps keep it warm during the night when the weather is cold but dry.
Does a Fennec take any shower? Very little research has been done about this little fox, but when it comes to shower, domesticated Fennecs owners will have no worries about giving it a good time. But of course, just like any other pets, do not let the little Fox bath for too long, otherwise it might catch a cold (and that will mean an expensive bill from the vet!).
